SCAPULA - a flat bone with a long ridge running down its lateral surface. Note that even though it is part of a limb, the terms "dorsal" and "ventral" can be used to describe the scapula.

Important features of the SCAPULA:

-SPINE - a PALPABLE long ridge on the lateral aspect of the scapula

-ACROMION - an enlarged PALPABLE process on the distal aspect of the scapular SPINE

-DORSAL BORDER - an arc-shaped palpable area on the dorsal aspect of the scapula

-SUPRAGLENOID TUBERCLE - a prominence on the distocranial aspect of scapula; proximal attachment of biceps brachii muscle

-SCAPULAR NOTCH - a notch on distal 1/4th of the cranial border of the scapula

-SUPRASPINOUS FOSSA - the craniolateral area of the scapula cranial to the scapular SPINE

-INFRASPINOUS FOSSA - the caudolateral area of the scapula caudal to the scapular SPINE

-NECK - a general term for the constricted area of the ventral part of the scapula

-SUBSCAPULAR FOSSA - essentially the medial surface of the bone remaining that is not the SERRATED FACE

-SERRATED FACE - a proximocranial rectangular area on the medial surface of the scapula. Area of attachment of the serratus ventralis muscle

-GLENOID CAVITY - a concave area on the ventral aspect of the bone that articulates with the head of the humerus forming the shoulder joint
