The CARPUS is a group of 7 CARPAL BONES and all soft structures located between the antebrachium and the metacarpal bones.

The proximal row of carpal bones consists of three bones: the INTERMEDIORADIAL CARPAL BONE (#3), the ULNAR CARPAL BONE (#5), and the ACCESSORY CARPAL BONE (#4). The accessory carpal bone is palmar and lateral and is PALPABLE in the live animal. This is analogous to your own pisiform bone, which is palpable on the lateropalmar aspect of your carpus. Palpate it!

The distal row of carpal bones consists of four bones designated FIRST CARPAL BONE (#6), SECOND CARPAL BONE (#7), THIRD CARPAL BONE (#8), and FOURTH CARPAL BONE (#9), in a MEDIAL to LATERAL orientation, respectively.

The proper terminology would be "FIRST CARPAL BONE".

Be prepared that sometimes the numbers used to describe the carpal bones can be Roman numerals.
