This image series compares the general anatomy of a typical cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae, using C4, T4, and L4. Know that these anatomical differences are usually general changes that occur in a cranial to caudal direction along the vertebral column.

As you examine the image series, note the following and how they are different between the different type of vertebrae:

1. size and orientation (is it pointing cranial? caudal?) of the spinous process
2. size and orientation (is it pointing cranial? caudal?) of the transverse process
3. the plane of the articular surface on the articular process, is it more HORIZONTAL or VERTICAL in the different vertebrae?
